Wanika FisherKeynote SpeakerWanika B. Fisher is a dedicated advocate for public safety and justice in Prince George’s County and is running to serve as the next State’s Attorney. She currently represents District 2 on the County Council and chairs the Health, Human Services, and Public Safety Committee, where she focuses on policies that uplift and protect families.
Raised by Nigerian and South Asian immigrant parents, Wanika’s commitment to service began early, by leading a neighborhood push for safer sidewalks. In 2018, she became the first first-generation African immigrant elected from Prince George’s County, continuing a career defined by breaking barriers and expanding community representation.
Wanika has worked on public safety from multiple angles, including serving as:

• Chair, Health, Human Services & Public Safety (County Council)
• Maryland House Judiciary Committee member
• Member of statewide and county police reform, accountability, and criminal justice workgroups
• Appointee to the Criminal Justice Information Advisory Board and Judicial Safety Facilities Board by Governor Wes Moore.As a Maryland Delegate for District 47B, she served as Assistant Majority Leader and the highest-ranking freshman in the House. She sponsored major legislation such as the Right to Counsel, ensuring tenants have legal representation, and championed issues including labor trafficking, environmental justice, immigration reform, and economic stability.
Professionally, Wanika is a private criminal defense attorney with firsthand courtroom experience. She holds a B.A. (Honors) in Government & Politics and African American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a J.D. from Penn State Dickinson School of Law.
A proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Wanika brings deep community roots and a proven record of leadership. She is ready to lead the State’s Attorney’s Office with fairness, accountability, and a commitment to safer, more equitable communities for all.

Dr. Lillian AgbeyegbeSpeakerDr. Lillian Agbeyegbe is the Chair of the Nigerian American Political Action Committee (NAPAC) – DMVPD, where she leads a bold mission to elevate Nigerian-American voices and strengthen civic engagement across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Philadelphia, and Delaware. With a clear and compelling vision, she is dedicated to expanding opportunities, increasing representation, and transforming the collective potential of the Nigerian-American community into measurable influence.
Her leadership is guided by the movement she champions—From Presence to Power—and anchored in the principles of Engage, Empower, Elevate. Through this framework, Dr. Agbeyegbe brings people together, builds capacity, and creates pathways for Nigerian Americans to participate confidently in the civic and political processes that shape their lives. She works to ensure that the community is informed, unified, and equipped to advocate for meaningful change.
Dr. Agbeyegbe’s leadership style is marked by purpose, passion, and a deep commitment to long-term advancement. She fosters collaboration, strengthens community networks, and inspires a shared effort to increase visibility, strengthen alliances, and amplify impact across the DMVPD region. A respected scholar and public health professional, Dr. Agbeyegbe holds a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from The City University of New York – Hunter College, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.

Wala BlegayPanelistsWala Blegay was elected to serve her first four-year term on the Prince George’s County Council in the November 2022 General Election and represents Councilmanic District 6.
She was elected as Vice Chair by her peers during her first term on the Council. During her first term, she spearheaded an aggressive people-driven agenda authoring legislation to encourage quality development in the county, limiting tobacco stores and marijuana shops in residential communities, incentivizing healthy restaurants, providing tax credits for public safety employees, creating a task force to address emergency room wait times, requiring security cameras in high-capacity apartment buildings, rent stabilization and more.
As Chair of the Council sitting as the Board of Health, she led the efforts of the Council addressing nurse-patient ratios, long emergency room wait times, and mental health.She is a passionate advocate for Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, and Workers’ Rights, and the creator and host of the “Chat With a Lawyer” television talk show, a free legal resource for county residents. A grassroots organizer, she has committed her office to the Engagement, Education, and Empowerment of all stakeholders.
An adjunct professor at the American University Washington College of Law and former staff attorney for the DC Nurses Association, advocating to improve the working environment for nurses and working families, Council Member Blegay has been noted as the “working people’s” voice.
She has previously served on the Maryland Governor’s Task Force for the Study of Economic Development and Apprenticeship Programs, ACLU of Maryland, Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women, Board of Directors for the Training Source, Prince George’s County Human Relations Commission, Prince George’s County NAACP, Emerge Maryland and the Maryland Coalition of Consumer Rights.
She has published numerous articles related to civil rights, health care and education and is the recipient of the 40 under 40 in Prince George’s County Award, the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials Presidential Service Award and the Daily Record’s Leading Women Award.
Council Member Blegay is a first generation Liberian and Nigerian American; graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.A. in Government and Politics; and she earned a J.D. from the American University, Washington College of Law.
She is a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. A Prince George’s County resident for more than 20 years, Council Member Blegay resides in Kettering.

Dr. Abimbola AkejuPanelistDr. Abimbola Akeju was born in the United States and returned to Nigeria as an infant, where she was raised with the values of hard work, education, integrity, and service. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in Nigeria and practiced medicine there, dedicating her career to improving the health and well-being of her community.
Twenty years ago, Dr. Akeju returned to the United States in pursuit of the American dream. As she built a new life for herself and her family, she discovered a more profound passion for empowering people beyond physical wellness. She observed that many of the challenges families face are not only medical—they are financial. With four children, now between ages 13 and 22, she sought a career path that allowed her to uplift others while still maintaining time freedom and balance for her own family.
This realization fueled her bold transition from healthcare to wealthcare, shifting her mission from treating illness to preventing financial hardship. Today, Dr. Akeju leverages her medical background, analytical strength, and heart for service to educate individuals and families on financial literacy, income protection, and strategies for building generational wealth. She is deeply committed to ensuring that people—especially underserved families—have access to the knowledge and tools necessary to thrive, not just survive.
Purpose-driven and family-focused, Dr. Akeju continues to inspire others through her advocacy for financial confidence, long-term stability, and the creation of lasting legacies.
